Mining Gand

Description

In the Gand district, above St. Jakob am Arlberg, the Gand mining site—now brought back to life—lies at an elevation of between 1,280 and 1,500 meters above sea level. According to the latest findings, ore was mined here as early as the 15th and 16th centuries. Discovered by an amateur archaeologist, the old tunnels have now been faithfully reconstructed, allowing visitors to take a genuine journey back in time. The Knåppa-Loch and the Markus Tunnel, once the miners’ workplace, are now accessible again. At the Knåppa-Loch, you can look down into the mountain to a depth of nearly 20 meters. The Markus Tunnel, located further down the slope, extends over 50 meters deep into the mountain and can be explored as part of a guided tour. In three mining buildings, you can experience history up close and learn, through vivid explanations, more about the arduous work that was carried out here.

For information about guided tours, please contact the Tourist Information Office or your hotel reception!

But this place is also great to explore on your own!

You do not need a guide - you can do it yourself as well, its so nice!

You can take a leisurely stroll along the Historic Trail above St. Jakob am Arlberg all the way to the Gand Mine, located at the trail’s end. To get back, take Bus Line 2 or walk through the village or along the Rosanna Stream.
