Ferragosto (from the Latin feriae Augusti 'feast day of Augustus') is the name given in Italy to the holiday that falls on August 15 - the Catholic Church celebrates the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary on this date. It is considered one of the most important church and family holidays in Italy.

According to ancient tradition, only very specific plants were used for the bouquets of herbs. Originally, only wild medicinal plants were allowed, but nowadays ornamental plants and garden flowers are also used. Over time, the bouquets (also known as bunches) became more and more impressive. It was said: "The bigger and more beautiful the bouquet, the bigger the farmer!" The composition of the bouquets varied from region to region. Despite this, some plants are remarkably common. In most cases, these were plants that had an old tradition in pagan protective and defensive magic. In other words, herbs were used that were believed to ward off thunderstorms, witches and the devil.
