Alpendorf 11, Sankt Johann im Pongau
A magnificent panoramic trail with no significant inclines. Running along the base of the Hochkönig, the second stage of the Salzburg Almenweg leads across gentle alpine meadows, through rugged gorges, and past impressive waterfalls to Dienten.
The starting point is the parking lot at the Arthurhaus. Follow the signs with the blue gentian, which marks the Salzburger Almenweg. After just a short while, you’ll reach the Windraucheggalm and, soon after, the Riedingalm. The trail continues through the picturesque Riedingtal valley. If you’d like—and it’s really worth it—you can take a detour of about 20 minutes’ walk to the waterfalls in the Riedingtal valley. After a short climb, you’ll reach the so-called “Four Huts”: the Schartenhütte, Molteraualm, and Brandstätthütte. Follow the trail and you’ll eventually pass through the Birgkar to the Erichhütte. From here, the route continues along a wide forest road to the bus stop on the Hochkönig Bundesstraße. The bus takes the happy hikers back to the Arthurhaus or directly to Mühlbach.
