From the Torri di Fraele climb the military mule track N197.1 through dense pine forest until you reach a shoulder at the foot of a rock face. You cut it on the flat following a ledge and then climb up through rocks, gullies and scree along the trail.
With a final hairpin turn you reach the forecourt overlooked by the Monte Scale Barracks. From inside the Barracks, a tunnel with two gabled powder houses allows you to cross the saddle and come out on the opposite side of the mountain. Through a rather narrow path one reaches the Cross of Mount Scale, which offers an excellent panoramic view of the entire Bormio area.
The return is planned along the northern flank of Monte Scale along the sent. N197. Initially the trail crosses meager pastures and then penetrates a dense mugo forest until it reaches the Casina del Lago, now a private shelter for fishermen on the tranquil Scale Lake. Skirting the lake, you return to the starting point.
