Wildlife feeding in winter
The wildlife feeding area in Klausbachtal in Berchtesgaden National Park is around 45 hectares in size. Around 65 red deer currently live here. The cows, deer and calves come to Klausbachtal on their own in winter, as they can easily survive the winter there. As soon as the rangers of the national park are of the opinion that all the red deer are in the deer feeding enclosure, the gates are closed. Red deer are migratory animals and would actually migrate to the riparian forest in winter. However, as this is not possible in the Berchtesgadener Land region, the deer are fed. As soon as spring arrives, the 25 gates are opened and the red deer return to the wild.
The hiking trail into Klausbachtal is cleared in winter and has hardly any inclines. There is also the option of taking a horse-drawn sleigh to the game feeding station. Information is available at the Klausbachhaus, the national park information point at the entrance to the Klausbach Valley.
