Alpendorf 3, Sankt Johann im Pongau
Castle Hohenwerfen, which is over 900 years old, sits enthroned on the steep rocky cone high above the Salzach Valley. During a visit to the medieval walls, you will not only learn interesting facts about life in earlier times, but you can also watch the impressive birds of prey show at the historic Landesfalkenhof. Falcons, vultures, eagles and other native birds of prey demonstrate their flying skills several times a day and provide an insight into the centuries-old art of falconry.
Journey into the Middle Ages
An "airy" experience awaits you at Hohenwerfen Castle, which is over 900 years old and towers over the Salzach Valley on a 155-metre-high rock cone. The mighty defensive structure was built at the same time as Hohensalzburg Fortress and is considered one of the best-preserved buildings of the late Middle Ages. Over the centuries, it has been the scene of attacks and sieges. Great rulers and sovereigns such as Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau were imprisoned here. Guided tours of the castle take place several times a day with historically dressed castle guides. The tour is offered in German and thirteen foreign languages. You should plan half a day for an excursion to the adventure castle with a guided tour, bird of prey show, exhibition visits and culinary refreshments in the castle tavern.
Opening times: April to October.
