Szczecin Philharmonic Orchestra

Przemyslaw Neumann • Conductor

Mieczysław Karłowicz • Serenade in C Major for String Orchestra, Op. 2

Mieczysław Karłowicz • Symphonic Poem, Op. 10, “Eternal Songs”

Jean Sibelius • Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 43

The second Chorin European Concert takes us to the northeastern part of Europe, to Poland and Finland. It introduces us to Mieczysław Karłowicz, one of the most significant musicians and composers of early Polish modernism. His music bears late-Romantic traits, influenced by Richard Wagner, Richard Strauss, and Tchaikovsky. The three-part symphonic poem “Eternal Songs” is a musical expression of the composer’s pantheistic creed, an apotheosis of nature and the universe. Of Sibelius’s extensive symphonic oeuvre, the Second Symphony is the most popular. The heroic and optimistic first and last movements were exactly what the Finnish audience needed in 1902, in the midst of the first period of Russian oppression. The premiere cemented Sibelius’s reputation as a national hero.
