The Viehscheid, also known as the Alpabtrieb, is a cherished tradition in the Allgäu. After spending about 100 days on the alpine pastures, the cows are herded back down into the valley by shepherds. The festively decorated “Kranzrind” leads the herd, whose bells and chimes can be heard from far away.
Herders and helpers wear traditional costumes: women in dirndls, men in lederhosen with edelweiss suspenders. On Friday, September 11, 2026, the animals will be handed over individually to their owners at the Scheidplatz in Höfen/Oberstaufen.
The cows’ return is celebrated by locals, visitors, and owners, accompanied by brass band music, party bands, and regional delicacies. Shuttle buses conveniently transport visitors between Oberstaufen, Steibis, and the Scheidplatz.
To mark the occasion, there will be breakfast from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.—perfect for anyone who wants to be there early!
