Their soundtrack to the musical Lord of the Rings, which premiered in Toronto in 2006, made them internationally famous. Since then, the Finnish folk band Värttinä has been one of the most popular ensembles in world music. Värttinä means spindle and is a reminder that women often used to enjoy singing while spinning together. The band, in which the women sing and the men play the instruments, has its roots in the traditional music of Karelia. But Värttinä has long since proven that rock is not just a question of clothing for women.
