Hohenschwangau Castle

Hohenschwangau Castle, or Schwanstein Castle as it was then known, was first mentioned in documents in the 12th century.

It was owned by the Knights of Schwangau until the 16th century and changed hands several times in the following period.

It was badly damaged during the Napoleonic Wars.

In 1832, it was acquired by the future King Maximilian II, father of King Ludwig II, who had it rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style under the direction of Domenico Quaglio.

The Bavarian royal family used it as a summer and hunting residence.

Hohenschwangau Palace has been owned by the Wittelsbach Equalization Fund since 1923.
