WATERCOUP
A LANDMARK OF THE RHÖN

At 950 metres above sea level, the Wasserkuppe is the highest and best-known mountain in the Rhön.

Whether in winter for tobogganing, skiing and snowboarding (floodlit lifts at the Wasserkuppe ski centre and at the Zuckerfeld), snow-kiting and cross-country skiing, or in summer for hiking, summer tobogganing, shopping, a visit to a museum or simply because of the excellent view and the good air: the Wasserkuppe casts its spell over you!

The cradle of gliding
The Wasserkuppe is also considered to be the cradle of motorless flight. As early as 1905, the first hang gliders took off on foot from the Wasserkuppe. Since 1920, student pilots have been trained on the Wasserkuppe.

Today, mixed flight operations take place on the Wasserkuppe. Glider and motor pilots use the special landing area at Wasserkuppe, model pilots use various slopes, such as the Pelzner slope or the spur at the Abtsroda hilltop, hang gliders and paragliders use the foot launch areas around the hilltop and on the Pferdskopf.

Attractions for young and old
As a special attraction, not only for children, the Wasserkuppe offers a double summer toboggan run (approx. 700 m each) and a Rhönbob run (approx. 1,000 m). Air jumps and somersaults are possible on the bungee trampoline.

The Wasserkuppe is suitable as an excursion destination for the whole family at any time of the year. In addition to numerous souvenir shops, you will also find the Rhön farm shop, the company Rhön Print and Mechthild Vörding's shop, which is known and popular far beyond the Rhön for novelties, unusual objects and fascinating games.

The Hessian administrative office of the Rhön Biosphere Reserve, the Rhön Info Centre, the mountain rescue service and the German Weather Service are also represented on the Wasserkuppe.

History up close
On the summit of the Wasserkuppe stands a relic from the times of the cold war: The Radom. Radom is a made-up word, composed of "radar" and "domicile". This radar dome is the last of formerly four domes. The military site Wasserkuppe no longer exists, the radar equipment was dismantled.

What remains are the base building and the shell, which are preserved as a landmark and viewing platform and made accessible to the public. This is due to the commitment of Radom Flug GmbH, which has made the preservation and the civilian subsequent use of the radome its task.
