Where smugglers and pack animals once roamed, there are still well-maintained trails today, steeped in history. On a varied circular hike, the Smugglers’ Trail takes you uphill over the St. Antönier Pass (2,379 m), then slightly downhill past Lake Gafier (2,290 m), and up a final ascent to the Gafierjoch (2,415 m) before descending to the mountain station. There is plenty to discover in the border region between Austria and Switzerland—with a little luck, you might even spot shy Alpine animals such as ibex, chamois, or marmots.
