Hotel Traube Post am Reschensee
In Glurns in the Upper Venosta Valley, the first and only whiskey distillery on Italian soil has been visible from afar since 2010. PUNI is the name of the company, whose red-brick checkerboard walls rise up in the immediate vicinity of the medieval town walls of Glurns. The 13-metre-high cube of the distillery is a successful example of contemporary architecture designed by South Tyrolean architect Werner Tscholl.
Whisky takes its time. However, it soon becomes clear that PUNI wants to be more than just Italy's first whisky distillery. Instead, it has created a coherent work of art that combines quality and vision, enjoyment and aesthetics, tradition and innovation. The whisky is stored in underground bunkers from the Second World War. Three qualities are targeted, as the whisky is stored in bourbon barrels from the USA, Marsala barrels from Sicily and wine barrels from South Tyrol. Whisky fans from all over the world can taste fine PUNI malt whiskies that are not a copy of the Scottish original, but incorporate the terroir of South Tyrol and Italy.
