It describes a competitive interplay between different voices or voice groups. This allows the composer to create complex musical structures in which different instruments or groups of instruments take turns coming to the foreground and engaging in a musical dialogue with one another. It is precisely these lively and varied soundscapes—so characteristic of Baroque music—that unite Bach and his contemporary Telemann with the Finnish composer, pianist, and conductor Olli Mustonen.
