Hiking in Rust on Lake Neusiedl

In Rust, you can discover nature on Lake Neusiedl on three well-signposted circular trails, which all start at the Storchenwiese and take you through reed beds, vineyards and the Rust hills.

The junior trail (approx. 40 minutes) is perfect for families:

You can watch storks foraging at the observation tower at the stork station - especially from May to mid-August - before returning to the new resting place by the almond grove and along the reeds.

The stork trail (approx. 1:45 hours) dives deeper into the Rust stork protection program and leads through vineyards and cultivated fallow land, where around 20-30 pairs of storks take up summer residence each year.

For more panoramic views, choose the Ruster Ausbruch trail (approx. 3:15 hours): slightly uphill to the ridge with magnificent lake views and exciting insights into viticulture, vegetation and the Ruster Ausbruch DAC. Along the way, lovingly designed rest areas with sandstone tables and benches from the St. Margarethner quarry invite you to take a deep breath. In total, there are around 40 km of hiking, Nordic walking and running trails in Rust and the surrounding area - ideal for an active break between the lake, vineyards and Freistadt flair.
