Museum Schloss Wilhelmsburg
Ehrental 2, Schmalkalden
The medieval association "Authentica Castrum Walinfels" with its army camp and fairy tale tent brings the Middle Ages back to life. Two groups dedicated to the playing of medieval music provide a fitting backdrop to the ambience: Viesematente and Rebula. With shawms, flutes, bagpipes, trummels and other coarse noises they roam the countryside, delighting the ear of one and frightening the ear of another. The absolute highlight are the sword fights according to the Codex Belli. Here the knights shine not only with their fighting technique but also with their humour. Gabriel the fire artist offers a fire show for young and old. Nicolaus will also pay a visit to the market. Children and adults should already prepare a suitable poem or song. Numerous stalls with traditional handicrafts, such as beekeeping, pottery, soapmaking, leatherwork, jewellery, pewter casting or bookbinding, invite you to marvel or buy. The culinary offers are also legendary: the delicious blueberry mulled wine, hot apple juice with or without shot, wonderful fruit brandies, potato pancakes, heavenly garlic bread and of course bratwurst. On both Saturdays of Advent, a fire show is presented at 7 p.m. that no one should miss. Although the colourful market hustle and bustle is really varied, the visitor is offered even more. He can visit the entire castle with the beautiful festival halls and the uniquely beautiful castle chapel, the permanent exhibition with focus: Reformation, Schmalkaldic League and the special exhibitions.
