Dorfmeistergasse 21, 7071 Rust, Austria
High above the Wulka Valley, the Forchtenstein Castle towers with majestic presence - one of the most impressive landmarks in Burgenland. The late medieval fortress, which was built in the 14th century and later came into the possession of the House of Esterházy, is still an excellently preserved castle complex today. It is one of the few castles in Europe that has never been conquered and impresses visitors with its history, architecture and views over the Pannonian landscape.
A particular highlight is the originally preserved treasure chamber, in which numerous historical art and curiosity objects belonging to the Esterházy family are presented - it is one of the most important private collections in Europe. In addition to the permanent exhibitions, the castle also features state rooms, battlements and exciting special exhibitions that bring history to life.
