EVERYONE PAY ATTENTION!

In autumn, it can get really loud in our game park due to our top deer Hansi. And that has a lot to do with jealousy.

WHAT IS HAPPENING WITH THE DEER RIGHT NOW?

Top dog Hansi wants to distribute his genes. To please the female pack, he decorates his antlers with grasses and branches. His aftershave is his urine, in which he rolls. Our hinds find this dufte.

AND THEN ON THEM WITH ROAR?

The lovemaking is rather short and silent. Deer roar to communicate. A longing "Ooo-üü-ooo-üü" from Hansi means, "Ladies, where are you?" A threatening, thunderous "Öh-öh-öh-öh" directed by Hansi to a cow moving away from the herd means, "Madame, will you stay here?" Our Hansi is a macho man! Source: GEO Saison | October 2021

Now begins again for a short time (mid-September to early November) the mating season of the deer, also called BRUNFT. Our red deer Hansi gathers his whole harem of hinds around him and shows by his loud, far audible roaring calls that he occupies a certain territory. He now keeps his male conspecifics at a distance.

Red deer are basically social and live outside the rutting season in herds separated by sex. They are mainly nocturnal.

The antlers of the stag develop from the first year of life: with the first year he carries two "spits" on the head (spit), then the antlers branch annually with several ends. At the end of March the stag sheds the antlers, which grow again until the beginning of August. The hinds carry 32 weeks and set a hind calf in late May to early June.

In the spring of 2020, we were able to significantly expand the enclosure to the south and connect it through the unique deer tunnel. You can observe the behavior of the animals and the breeding spectacle up close on the newly created hiking trail around the enclosure.
