The Choriner Musiksommer mourns the loss of Prof. Peter Gülke

Peter Gülke • Conductor (born April 29, 1934, in Weimar; † April 26, 2026, in Weimar)

It was with great sadness that the Choriner Musiksommer learned on the evening of April 26, 2026, of the death of Peter Gülke, just a few days before his 92nd birthday in his hometown of Weimar.

A teacher and friend—that was Peter Gülke—to many musicians. He brought his beloved music to life in the most intense and heartfelt way for audiences who experienced him as a conductor and music educator during the introductions to his concerts.

This concert will be held in memory of this great European, conductor, and musicologist.

Two different concert formats are juxtaposed in the Staatskapelle Halle’s program: On the one hand, a Baroque concerto grosso, conceived for a more chamber-music-like concert experience in which a group of soloists takes center stage, playing together or “concerting.” On the other hand, Beethoven’s fifth and final piano concerto, which in form and expression represents the type of large-scale, dramatic work and requires a single outstanding virtuoso and a large, powerful, and sonorous orchestra. With András Schiff, Peter Gülke—who has long been closely associated with the Brandenburg Festival—brings a proven expert on Beethoven’s works to Chorin.
