The RIAS Chamber Choir, under the direction of Justin Doyle, is in a class of its own, and this choral concert—which revolves around two themes—promises to be no exception: guilt and forgiveness (in the “Miserere” settings) and grief and loss, empathy, and consolation (in the “Stabat Mater”). In his version of the “Miserere,” Scottish composer James MacMillan transports listeners to soundscapes full of radiance and warmth. More austere and mystical, more turbulent, yet no less heartfelt is the “Miserere” by Slovenian composer Nana Forte. Domenico Scarlatti’s magnificent ten-part “Stabat Mater” from 1724—a work of incomparable aura that is far too rarely performed—centers on fundamental questions of human existence and touches the listener deeply. And Frank Martin’s Mass ranks among the most significant and, at the same time, most beautiful choral works of the 20th century.
