Neuschwanstein Castle today - visitor records and conservation problems Seven weeks after the death of King Ludwig II, Neuschwanstein was opened to the public in 1886. The reclusive king had built the castle in order to withdraw from the public eye - now his refuge became a magnet for the public. Today, Neuschwanstein is one of the most visited castles and palaces in Europe. Around 1.4 million people visit "the castle of the fairytale king" every year. In summer, an average of more than 6,000 visitors a day crowd through rooms that were intended for a single occupant. This - in combination with the alpine climate and light - leads to considerable stress on the valuable furniture and textiles, which we are working hard to preserve. The idyllic location of Neuschwanstein is unique. However, movements in the foundation area must be constantly monitored and the steep rock faces must be secured again and again. Likewise, the harsh climate severely attacks the limestone facades, which requires renovation measures time and again.
