Getreidegasse Salzburg Old Town

The Getreidegasse is the heart of Salzburg's Old Town and attracts a large number of visitors with its unmistakable charm and Mozart's birthplace. In addition to international fashion chains, the Getreidegasse delights with historic inns and unique traditional businesses.

The passageways of the Getreidegasse

The arcaded through-houses, some of which are decorated with works of art, have had a decisive influence on Salzburg's urban development. Today they fulfill their purpose as shopping arcades and galleries. The most famous passageway is the Schatz-Haus from Getreidegasse 3 to Universitätsplatz. There, in a dark niche, is a poignant relief depiction of the Madonna and Child Jesus.

The Getreidegasse as a promenade and shopping mile The Getreidegasse attracts visitors with its extensive range of international fashion chains, traditional stores and diverse gastronomy. In addition to jewelry, traditional costumes, hip accessories, antiques, leather and paper goods and perfumeries, shoppers can also buy delicatessen and groceries in the Getreidegasse. A special highlight are the graceful and playful guild signs on the house facades high above visitors' heads. The traditional Wieber locksmith's shop in Getreidegasse still makes these "advertising signs" by hand.

The name of the Getreidegasse

Originally, Getreidegasse was called Trabe-, Trab- or Trav-Gasse. The name came from the word "traben", meaning "to walk", but also referred to the trotting of horses. Over the years, the names Tragasse, Traidgasse and Getreidgasse eventually gave rise to the current name Getreidegasse. The name changes make it clear that the name Getreidegasse originally had nothing to do with grain.
