The history of Altfinstermünz dates back to the 9th century AD. At that time, the historic site was the court or mall for the region of Lower Engadine, Nauders and Pfunds. Over the centuries, the fortress has repeatedly been the scene of important historical events and was a toll and customs station. Since 1999, the bridge and the entire complex have been open to the public again. Altfinstermünz can be reached from various directions, one route leads from the Lower Engadine to the Upper Court, a second route already led to Altfinstermünz in Roman times, the Via Claudia Augusta.
