Bike Tour: Hinterautal–Source of the Isar–Kastenalm
To the “Source of the Isar”: Through the wild Hinterautal Valley to the rustic Kastenalm
If you’re looking for adventure, love majestic mountains, and prefer a route with only a few climbs, you’ll find it all on the 14.5 km stretch between Scharnitz and the Kastenalm.
The route starts at the Scharnitz Nature Park Information Center or the Länd parking lot and follows a low-traffic, paved municipal road for the first 1.5 km. Shortly before the Isarlodge Wiesenhof, the easily rideable forest trail begins through the beautiful Hinterautal valley. The distance from the start of the route to the Gleirschhöhe is just under 3 km, and this is the only section that climbs steadily and relatively steeply. From the Gleirschhöhe, the route continues with only a gentle incline right alongside the Isar as it winds into the valley, constantly framed by the mighty foothills of the Karwendel Mountains. After covering three-quarters of the route, you’ll reach the source of the Isar, where there’s a lovely rest area with information about the valley and the river. After another 10-minute ride, you’ll need to park your bike and walk the final 500 meters to the Kastenalm, which is situated in a vast pasture. From here, you can also hike to the Hallerangeralm or the Hallerangerhaus (hiking time approx. 2 hours). The entire valley—and especially the area around the Kastenalm—offers “pure nature.” To return to the starting point/parking lot, simply take the same route back.
Caution: grazing livestock—please keep your distance and cross the pasture area quietly and briskly.
