Tour description:
From the Speikboden Hut, the marked trail initially leads uphill across gentle alpine meadows. After a short climb, the trail crosses the expansive slopes of the Speikboden and already offers magnificent views of the surrounding peaks of the Lasörling Group. The trail is well-maintained and winds through varied terrain, passing through alpine meadows and rocky slopes.
After about an hour, you reach the saddle between the Wohl and the Gritzer Hörndl. From here, the view of the idyllically situated Gritzer Lakes opens up for the first time. The trail now leads slightly downhill to the three small cirque lakes, which lie picturesquely nestled in a hollow and are partially connected to one another when the water level is high. The lakes are a peaceful resting spot and impress with their clear water as well as the panoramic views of Kastal, Hofspitze, and the surrounding peaks.
For the return trip, follow the same route back to the Speikbodenhütte. Along the way, you’ll once again enjoy the vast alpine meadows and the beautiful views of the Defereggental valley. If you have enough time and are in good physical condition, you can extend the tour with a short detour to the Gritzer Hörndl, where you’ll be rewarded with an excellent panoramic view.
Tip: This tour is especially suitable on warm summer days. The Gritzer Lakes are located in the Hohe Tauern National Park and are a popular destination for nature lovers and photographers. Sure-footedness on alpine trails and sturdy footwear are recommended.
