Ever since Goethe’s famous poem “Do You Know the Land Where the Lemons Bloom?”, Italy has been a place of longing and the epitome of a paradisiacal Arcadia. It is not only the abundance of works of art in the churches and palazzi, but above all the sun, the Mediterranean landscape, and the supposedly good life that draw us Germans to Italy time and again.
The Staatskapelle Weimar, under the direction of Oliver Tardy, brings everything in music associated with Italy to Chorin, allowing us to revel in a afternoon of longing for Italy. The program features everything from the folk Neapolitan song that became a hit to a bel canto aria by Donizetti, Paganini’s wildlyvirtuosic violin music by Paganini, as well as Boccherini’s gentle and peaceful minuet, wistful waltzes, dramatic opera overtures, and much more.
