Helpful facts

Over numerous waterfalls the water of the Pöllat falls thunderously into the depths. Framed by imposing rocks, a well-maintained hiking trail leads from Hohenschwangau through the impressive gorge directly to the world-famous Neuschwanstein Castle. The Eisensteig, anchored in the steeply rising cliffs, runs directly above the gorge. Then a stepped path leads up into the wide, wooded bulge of the gorge. High above the deeply cut gorge is the famous Marienbrücke bridge, from which there is an excellent view of Neuschwanstein Castle. From the hotel, drive to the main road and turn right. After about 100m turn left towards Hohenschwangau. Start your tour from the large car park in the centre of Hohenschwangau and walk left across the car park in front of Café Kainz, behind the Hohenschwangau grammar school until you reach the access path leading to the old gypsum mill. From here you walk always upwards along the Pöllat. To get back to the valley, you can walk down to Hohenschwangau on the wide footpath or you can walk up to the junction Marienbrücke on the wide road. A few metres above this junction is also the bus turning point, from where you can take the shuttle bus from Neuschwanstein Castle down into the valley. You will cover about 4 km and need about 1.5 hours for the hike.
