Details

There are castles, fortresses and palaces to discover throughout the Tyrolean region. Many of them are located on a mountain and also have a wonderful view. The most famous castles include Kufstein Fortress and Ambras Castle. But take a closer look for yourself and find your own favorite.

Kufstein Fortress

The Kufstein Fortress appears high above the town from afar and has often been the scene of many military conflicts and a hotly contested object between Bavaria and Tyrol in its eventful history. An interesting and eventful tour awaits you in the fortress and local history museum. In the meantime, the fortress has also developed into a large event location where many world stars such as James Blunt and Satus Quo have performed.

Ambras Castle

Ambras Castle is located approx. 100 meters above the valley floor created by the Inn river on a rock. News about Ambras dates back to the 10th century, with the spelling "Amras" or "Omras". Long before Innsbruck became a city, it achieved supra-regional importance in the High Middle Ages as the permanent seat of the Counts of the House of Andechs, who were originally wealthy in Upper Bavaria.

Nothing remains of the original Andechs castle, which was destroyed in 1133. The castle passed from the Andechs family to the Tyrolean sovereigns by inheritance. The medieval existence can only be seen in the structure of the high castle.

Tratzberg Castle

The Renaissance jewel high above the small village of Stans in the Tyrolean lowlands is privately owned by the Counts Goess-Enzenberg. The 6,800 square meter Tratzberg Castle is one of the most important art and cultural monuments in the country and offers exciting tours.
