Franz Marc, Paul Klee and Gustave Flaubert
March 13 - July 17, 2022
The Franz Marc Museum opens a new and previously unnoticed perspective on the work of Franz Marc and its own collection. On the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Gustave Flaubert's birth, the exhibition "Animal Fates. Franz Marc, Paul Klee and Gustave Flaubert" shows that Franz Marc's reception of the great French writer had significant consequences for his work around 1912/13. Marc's reading of Flaubert's "Legend of Saint Julian" motivated him to create illustrations of this novella, which led directly to Marc's important painting "Animal Fates" (1913).
