Route description:
Starting point is the mountain station of the Alpendorf gondola (operating hours: June to October). From the mountain station follow the road via the Buchauhütte to the Gernkogelalm. From here, follow the path to the right around the wooded crest of the Gernkogel. Across a wide saddle you hike in the direction of Sonntagskogel, on a steep path you go directly over the ridge to the summit. From the Sonntagskogel you can still hike downhill in the direction of Wagrain to the Großunterbergalm. The way back is on the ascent route.
Alternatively: Shortly before the summit of the Sonntagskogel, turn off in the direction of the Maurachalm. The Maurachalm is one of the most rustic alpine pastures in the country. Back you take the same way or the circular route around the Grindkogel.
