Unterwandalm – Karseggalm - Breitenebenalm

Ascent via the farm road (you can also take the shortcuts through the forest) to the Unterwandalm. Here at the alpine pasture, there’s often music and singing. The herdsman plays his accordion while you enjoy a delicious snack and the children romp around on the playground. The trail continues at the same elevation to the Karseggalm. The Karseggalm is arguably one of the most rustic huts in the entire Alpine region, and at approximately 400 years old, it is also the oldest alpine hut in the Großarl Valley. The floor inside the hut is lined with clay and tree bark. It’s quite possible that the “Wehstatt”—as the “kitchen” is called in an old hut—will be full of smoke. This is because, as most people can no longer imagine, there’s an open hearth here. A specialty from the Großarl Valley is produced here: Knetkäse. To make this cheese, an open hearth is needed to smoke it. Once a week, you can watch the dairymen as they make the sour cheese so typical of the Großarl Valley. There’s no shortage of culinary delights at the Karseggalm either. In addition to sour cheese and Knetkäse, there’s homemade bread, rich yellow alpine butter, sausage, bacon, sweet cheese, and quark spread. All served with a glass of fresh whole milk or buttermilk. Descend along a hiking trail, past a fish pond, to the Breitenebenalm. This alpine pasture is particularly known for its desserts, such as apple strudel, Kaiserschmarrn, blackberry dumplings, and Buchteln. In addition to the desserts, guests can also enjoy many hearty dishes such as roast pork, cheese gnocchi, crisp salads, alpine burgers, and much more.
