In the cold and snowy winter months, red deer no longer find enough food. Due to human intervention in the natural habitat, foraging at low altitudes is no longer possible. The Hohe Tauern National Park has therefore set up a feeding station in the Habachtal NP research area. During the winter months from January to February, locals and visitors can experience the wild goings-on of the mighty stags and young calves up close on this tour.
The tour starts at the Habachtal parking lot, where all visitors are given "Grödl - snow chains for your shoes" depending on the weather conditions. We then set off in the tractor trailer for around 25 minutes along the forest road to bring us a little closer to the feeding area. However, we then have to cover the last kilometer on foot. On the wide forest path through the forest at the start of our easy hike, we can marvel at the huge icicles on the rocks at the edge of the forest path - in deep winter conditions. We are accompanied along the way by a hunter who tells us a lot about feeding and red deer, until we reach the point where we are no longer allowed to talk to each other loudly, otherwise the deer would hear us and run away.
