Old craft - rediscovered!

Next to the Spitalskirche on Meranplatz, practically at the foot of the old Salzstraße, stands an old smithy that was mentioned in documents as early as 1550. In the beginning, the blacksmith and wainwright trades belonged to the Rottenmann guild, Aussee did not get its own "guild rules" until 1683. A visible sign of this privilege was the guild flag made of black and red silk. The old blacksmith's shop, originally built for the Aussee salt-carriers, was run by the last Aussee blacksmith, Franz Prentner, until 1971, when it was closed down. Since last year, Fritz Auzinger, a native of Ennstal, has been putting this almost extinct traditional trade on display in the old style. Horse owners can have their animals shod.only open during the summer months!
