In the 17th century, a mysterious soldier appears in a Protestant village claiming to be the rightful heir to a manor. But behind the new identity lies a woman who pretends to be a man in order to gain social recognition and freedom. As the lord of the manor, she marries the daughter of a large landowner, but her secret increasingly threatens to come to light.

The film Rose by Markus Schleinzer is an atmospheric historical drama about identity, gender roles and the desire for self-determination. Inspired by historical accounts, it combines a dark visual language with an intense portrait of a woman fighting against the boundaries of her time.
