Castel Tirolo

Tyrol Castle stands on a hill above the town of Merano and is one of the most important historical castles in South Tyrol. Built in the 12th century, it was the ancestral seat of the Counts of Tyrol and gave the entire Tyrol region its name. The castle still preserves remarkable medieval elements, including Romanesque and Gothic frescoes and a richly decorated chapel. Today it houses the South Tyrol Museum of Cultural and Regional History, where visitors can learn about the history and culture of the region. From the castle there is also a beautiful panoramic view of the Adige Valley and the area around Merano.
