Hohenschwangau Castle
Hohenschwangau Castle—known at the time as Schwanstein Castle—was first mentioned in historical records in the 12th century.
It remained in the possession of the Knights of Schwangau until the 16th century and changed hands several times in the period that followed.
It was severely damaged during the Napoleonic Wars.
In 1832, it was acquired by the future King Maximilian II, father of King Ludwig II, who had it rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style under the direction of Domenico Quaglio.
The Bavarian royal family used it as a summer and hunting residence.
Since 1923, Hohenschwangau Castle has been owned by the Wittelsbach Compensation Fund.
