Helpful facts

A forest cottage in Poland around 1930: a young man, widowed at an early age, father of a daughter, is trapped in grief. He receives a visit from his younger brother. He is terminally ill but full of joie de vivre and plays waltzes, fox trots and pop songs he has heard in the big world on the piano day in, day out. Folk songs can be heard outside the house. Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz, a close friend of composer Karol Szymanowski, created a sensual and philosophical piece of literature with his story "The Birch Grove", which was also made into a film by Polish Oscar winner Andrzej Wajda in 1970.
