Altdahn Castle Massif - Guided Hike

A hike to one of the most impressive historic sites in the Dahner Felsenland: the castle complex of Alt-Dahn, Grafendahn, and Tanstein.

The approximately 7-kilometer tour leads through the Palatinate Forest up to the striking red sandstone cliffs, atop which three medieval castles stand. This imposing complex stretches for nearly 200 meters and is one of the largest medieval fortifications in the Palatinate.

During the tour, you’ll discover the different areas of the three castles: the massive gate and gun towers of Alt-Dahn, the remains of Grafendahn’s shield wall, and the older sections of Tanstein. Particularly distinctive are the passageways, staircases, and chambers carved into the rock, which connect the individual levels of the castle complex.

From the castle cliffs, a sweeping view also opens up across the Dahn rocky landscape all the way to the Vosges Mountains.
