One of the fundamental characteristics of Baroque music is the principle of concertante. It describes a competitive interplay between different voices or voice groups. This allows the composer to create complex musical structures in which different instruments or groups of instruments take turns coming to the foreground and engaging in a musical dialogue with one another. It is precisely these lively and varied soundscapes—so characteristic of Baroque music—that unite Bach and his contemporary Telemann with the Finnish composer, pianist, and conductor Olli Mustonen. Mustonen’s whimsical and energetic “Nonetto II” for strings is a showpiece for the musicians. The same is true of Bach’s Concerto in D Major, in which the exceptional trumpeter Matthias Höfs showcases his instrument.
