Sacred Heart Bonfire in Mösern
In the evening at 9:00 p.m., the traditional Sacred Heart Bonfire will take place near the Peace Bell, lit by the Mösern Volunteer Fire Department.
The tradition of Sacred Heart devotion is deeply rooted in Tyrol, with associations participating in religious celebrations throughout the region. The festival has its origins in the biblical story of the piercing of the Sacred Heart with a lance and is regarded as a symbol of baptism and the Eucharist. The special significance of this celebration for Tyrol lies in the fact that the vow to venerate the Sacred Heart of Jesus was made during the defensive wars of 1796, and Andreas Hofer’s surprise victories against Bavaria and the French were attributed to this vow. To this day, these events are commemorated with festive church services, accompanied by processions in many communities. The custom of the Sacred Heart fires also arose from this vow and served as a means of communication during the struggles for freedom in Tyrol.
