MARIENBERG ABBEY
Far from the madding crowd, the Benedictine Marienberg Abbey lies on high, overlooking Burgeis/Burgusio. You can reach the abbey from Burgeis/Burgusio via the Benediktweg footpath. The abbey was founded almost 900 years ago and houses a crypt with a plethora of Roman frescoes. The collegiate church is the only three-nave pillar basilica in the Venosta Valley. The museum gives you an insight into the life of the padre.
ST. NIKOLAUS CHURCH
From the hotel you can see the St. Nikolaus church. It is situated on the ancient Venosten-way and the Via Claudia Augusta at an important fork in the directions of Burgeis on one side and the Reschenpass on the other. In the past many travelers, before crossing the Reschenpass, asked God here for a safe conduct.
The Romanesque church was consecrated by the bishop of Chur in 1199. It is the only church in the Vinschgau Valley where the tower is situated directly over the apse.
Unique is the pan ceiling from the 16th century. There is pictured a jester, sitting in a washing trough, and underneath it you can read the following inscription: „Item, wenn Narren lang leben, dann warden sie alt“ (When
jesters live long, then they grow old).
