Felsentherme Bad Gastein

The Felsentherme Bad Gastein, the mother of all thermal baths, has been in existence for more than 50 years! More than half a century ago, on September 28, 1968, the Felsenbad opened as Austria’s first public thermal bath. This marked a historic milestone. The thermal water—the true “gold of the Tauern”—was thus made accessible to the public.

The opening of the Felsenbad was a decisive step in the modernization of the world-class spa town of Bad Gastein. Finally, the requirements placed on a world-class spa town at the time—namely, combining spa treatments with sports—were met. As early as March 22, 1968, the *Salzburger Nachrichten* reported on how swimming in the unique Gastein thermal water made the use of thermal treatments more attractive and effective than simply lying in a bathtub. This internationally acclaimed structure attracted 450 visitors on its very first day open to the public and recorded an impressive 120,000 guests in its first seven months. The Felsentherme Bad Gastein thus got off to a promising start and has since delighted countless visitors with its unique thermal experience.
