MEMORIAL SITE POINT ALPHA AN INCOMPARABLE TESTIMONY OF TIME Memorial Point Alpha The Point Alpha memorial complex is an incomparable testimony to time and a unique place to learn about history. Here, the outposts of NATO and the Warsaw Pact stood face to face for four decades. Point Alpha presents the confrontation of the two power blocs, the construction of the border fortifications with their security elements, military procedures and life on and with the border from the perspective of the population at the authentic site. Opening hours April to October: daily from 9.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. November and March: daily from 10.00 - 17.00 hours December to February: Tuesday to Sunday from 10.00 - 16.30 hrs. A place steeped in history Until 1989, Observation Point Alpha was one of the most prominent observation bases of the US Armed Forces in Europe and was considered one of the hottest points of confrontation during the Cold War. In the "House on the Border" you will find a permanent exhibition on the inhumane border regime of the GDR and the life of the population on and with the border. Next to the permanent exhibition is a section on the multimedia presentation of the Peaceful Revolution and its non-violent struggle for freedom and civil rights. Together with the "Path of Hope" in the outdoor area, it pays tribute to the events of the Peaceful Revolution and the pan-European freedom movement. The authentic audio and visual material brings the drama and dynamics of the social upheaval in 1989 back to life. Border reconstruction The border reconstruction in the outdoor area gives you a direct impression of the tightening of the border fortifications over the decades. In 2008, almost 100,000 visitors came to the memorial. Over 1,200 groups of schoolchildren and adults were guided through the exhibition and the grounds by our guides.
