Place of pilgrimage and monastery Maria Weißenstein
The "Cathedral in the Dolomites" was founded as a result of an apparition of the Virgin Mary by the hermit Leonhard Weißensteiner, who - in 1553 - encountered Our Lady after falling into a deep gorge. In her honor he built a chapel, which was further developed and is today an impressive pilgrimage site and namesake of the village near Petersberg. The place of pilgrimage gained worldwide fame with the visit of Pope John Paul II in July 1988.
Holy Mass is also held on Sundays at 10:00 am, 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm in German; in Italian at 9:00 am, at 11:00 am, at 3:00 pm and at 5:00 pm.
It takes only 15 minutes to reach Maria Weißenstein by car, but you can also get to the pilgrimage site directly from the Ganischgerhof on the pilgrimage path on foot or by bike.
