The concert is dedicated to the music of the Southern European countries Italy, Spain, and France. In his symphonic poem “Fontane di Roma,” the Italian composer Respighi expresses the feelings evoked in him by four distinctive fountains in Rome at different times of day. He translates his impressions into atmospherically dazzling musical images and masterfully colors them in an impressionistic style. The Spaniard Rodrigo owes his fame solely to the famous Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra, which he named after the former summer residence of the Spanish kings in Aranjuez and in which he pays tribute to Spanish flamenco.
The journey continues to Paris, where the French composer Bizet, then just 17 years old, wrote his Symphony in C major in 1855. It was not until 80 years later, in 1935, that it received its premiere, and Bizet was finally no longer perceived exclusively as the composer of “Carmen.”
