ONE OF MANY STORIES...
Gin is derived from the Dutch "genever". Genever was originally a medicine, and England's first encounter with gin was on the Dutch battlefields - as a remedy. When William III of Orange became King of England, he brought genever to his subjects. For the English, the word genever was too difficult to pronounce and so it became gin. Gin is a grain distillate with juniper berry extracts and many other botanicals (herbs/spices).
