Traditional house blessing around Epiphany
The custom of "vengeance" is often still practiced in many homes.
The Feast of the Three Wise Men is on 6 January. As the Bible tells us, the three wise men brought gold, frankincense and myrrh to the infant Jesus. A luminous event in the dark beginning of the life of the child Jesus. These three mysterious men have only been called "kings" since the 6th century. Since the 9th century, they have been called Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar and are regarded as representatives of the three races in the world, the three phases of life and the three continents.
Today, all the preparations are usually made the day before the feast: Consecrated chalk and incense as well as holy water are collected from the church.
Then, usually on January 5, families go through their homes praying. With a smoking pan containing embers and incense, holy water and chalk. All rooms are blessed, C-M-B and the year are written on front doors: "Christus mansionem benedicat" Christ bless this house. In the vernacular, the letters are often translated as Caspar, Mel-chior, Balthasar.
We invite all guests to the joint house blessing with Andrea at 8.30 pm at reception today
