Drinking for a good cause - the cork campaign

Helpful facts

Did you know that with every bottle of wine you enjoy with us, you are doing something good?

Many bottles of wine and sparkling wine are still sealed with cork. However, a cork stopper is much more than a bottle closure: it is a natural product of centuries of sustainable land management in the Spanish cork oak forests. Cork has a very good carbon footprint and can be easily recycled. That's why reusing bottle corks is a real win.

The NABU (Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union) cork campaign has set itself the goal of collecting and recycling as many as possible of the 1.2 billion bottle corks that are produced in Germany every year. This could turn into 32,000 cubic meters of ecologically valuable insulating granulate for house construction. So far, only one tenth of the bottle cork has been fed into this material cycle. NABU uses the proceeds from the sale of the insulation granulate to support crane conservation projects in Spain - the home of the cork oaks - and Germany. The aim of the conservation work in Spain is to preserve traditional cork farming and thus the unique landscape of the so-called dehesas.

Anyone who collects corks for NABU's nationwide COR campaign is doing good for the environment, because the valuable material cork is being saved from destruction as waste. In addition, awareness of recycling is created and, above all, a social component that is often forgotten also plays a major role: jobs are created for the disabled and long-term unemployed who process the corks.

A year ago we started collecting the corks and have collected 18000 pieces in a year!!!! Thanks to you, because only if the bottles are uncorked, then we can make a valuable contribution. Our sommelier Markus Balzer brought the corks in August from the Allgäu to the Moselle, to our winemaker friends Nicolas Weber, from the Margarethenhof winery in Ayl. Together with his collected corks, he will take over the further transport to Trier for us, in order to hand them in at the collection point there!

And of course we continue to collect! Every guest is allowed to donate his cork at our restaurant! We say to all participants THANK YOU and continue to drink for the good cause!
