Tai Chi is an ancient martial art that was originally developed for the purpose of self-defense. Today, however, Tai Chi is mainly known as a form of meditation and movement therapy. It has an effect on the autonomic nervous system and thus helps to reduce stress. The conscious breathing and slow movements also strengthen the ability to concentrate.
Tai Chi goes back to the term "Taiji-quan".
Taiji" refers to the highest active principle in life, the interplay of yin and yang. "Quan" means fist and refers to the hand that fights without weapons.
