The Vienna String Soloists

The ensemble consists of 11 "soloists": 6 violins, 2 violas, 2 cellos and 1 double bass

The ensemble "Wiener Streichersolisten" was founded in 1974 by members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and since then has dedicated itself specifically to the literature for string orchestra in chamber music formations from the Baroque to New Music, with a focus on Viennese Classicism and Romanticism. The countless original compositions are supplemented with arrangements specially tailored to the ensemble. Opera literature and Viennese music, for example from the Strauss dynasty, are also not neglected in the programs.

Following successful concerts in Austria, the Vienna String Soloists have also performed abroad since 1979. The ensemble can now look back on over 300 acclaimed concerts with performances in Germany, tours of Italy and its first appearance in Japan in 1982. The ensemble has also made guest appearances in the Czech Republic, Switzerland, France at the Festival de Paris and in Cyprus, as well as in China at the Beijing Festival in 2004 on behalf of the Austrian Federal Government. From 2006 onwards, the orchestra has performed for several years at the International Bruckner Festival in St. Florian, Upper Austria.

The international press has described the Wiener Speichersolisten as an "absolutely world-class ensemble" and raves about their "velvety sound". A French newspaper headlined enthusiastically: "The sun rises in the East!"

The Vienna String Soloists have worked with important soloists such as Mischa Maisky, Rudolf Buchbinder, Gidon Kremer, James Levine, Aurèle Nicolet, Hermann Baumann and Sabine Meyer. CD and radio recordings round off the ensemble's extensive artistic activities.

Two annual concerts organized by the ensemble have become a tradition: the summer concert at Schleissheim Castle near Munich and the Advent concert in the Angelika Kauffmann Saal in Schwarzenberg.

The main aim of the ensemble is to cultivate the world-famous Viennese string sound by uniting members of the two great Viennese orchestras, the Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. The Viennese string sound is to be consciously brought out into the world again with varied programs.
